Highlights

Only true cave in Hocking Hills (200 ft long, 30 ft wide, 25 ft high), seven Gothic-arch windows, CCC stone stairs, Native American history

The Trail

Every other "cave" in Hocking Hills is technically a recess cave — an overhanging cliff carved by erosion. Rock House is different. It's a genuine cave: a tunnel-like corridor approximately 200 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 25 feet high, formed along perpendicular joint fractures in the sandstone rather than by simple undercutting. Seven Gothic-arch window openings punctuate the outer wall, providing natural light and dramatic forest views from inside the cave.

The cave sits midway up a 150-foot cliff, accessed by roughly 200 stone stairs built by the CCC in the 1930s. The descent is steep but manageable. Inside, evidence of Native American habitation remains visible — ovens carved into the cave walls suggest sustained use as a shelter and cooking area. The cave later earned its "Robbers' Roost" nickname from its use as a hideout by horse thieves and counterfeiters in the 1800s.

The cave interior is genuinely dark in places — bring a flashlight or headlamp to fully appreciate the space. In fall, the Gothic-arch windows frame the surrounding forest in peak color, creating a gallery of natural landscape paintings that hikers describe as one of the most unique experiences in the park.

Tips & What to Know

The stairs are steep and can be slippery — good footwear is essential. Dogs are allowed but the combination of steep stairs and dark cave interior isn't ideal for nervous pets. Bring a flashlight. The cave is notably cooler than outside, even in summer — a welcome relief on hot days. Rock House sees moderate crowds, falling between Old Man's Cave (packed) and Cantwell Cliffs (empty).
