Thanksgiving Week Hikes in Hocking Hills: Short Walks and Early Dusk

Seasonal Guide · October 12, 2026 · 4 min read

Thanksgiving week is a good time for short walks in Hocking Hills, as long as you plan around the light. Thanksgiving Day 2026 is November 26, the sun sets at roughly 5:10 p.m. Eastern, and Ohio DNR closes the park's trails half an hour after sunset. That makes a late-morning or early-afternoon loop the sweet spot. Here is how to plan one, which trails suit a post-meal walk, and what to check first.

The light is the schedule

Ohio DNR says trails and picnic areas in Hocking Hills State Park are open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. In late November, that is a short window. Using standard solar calculations for the Logan area, sunrise is around 7:25 a.m. and sunset is around 5:08 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Check a sunrise-sunset calendar for the exact minute before you go, and remember that gorges darken earlier than open ground because the cliff walls block the low light.

A practical rule is to be back at the car by about 4 p.m. If you want to know why staying out later is a poor idea, see our after-dark safety guide.

Choose short loops

Ohio DNR lists several trails at roughly a mile or less, which suit the short days and a full stomach:

The longer routes, such as the Grandma Gatewood section at about 6 miles, are poor choices for Thanksgiving week when the sun sets so early. If you want to see the fall landscape without a long walk, read our guide to late-fall trails after the leaves drop.

A sample Thanksgiving week plan

WhenPlan
Before the mealWalk Ash Cave or Old Man's Cave in the morning. Light is good, and you are home before the rush to the table.
Thanksgiving afternoonA short, flat walk if you want one. Ash Cave or a local path, finished well before sunset.
FridayThe day after is a popular outing. Expect company at trailheads and plan an early start. I could not find official visitor counts, so treat crowd advice as general.
WeekendTry a quieter area or an early start. See quiet trail windows.

Popular trailhead lots can fill at busy times, so an early start is the simplest way to avoid the crowds.

Hunting season and what to wear

Ohio's statewide deer gun season runs November 30 to December 6, 2026, which is the Monday after Thanksgiving, with a bonus weekend on December 19 and 20. Deer archery season is open from September 26, 2026 to February 7, 2027. Ohio DNR notes that hunting is permitted in most state forests, as regulated by the Division of Wildlife.

The state park's gorge trails are what most visitors walk, and I could not find a hunting statement for those trails, so ask at the visitor center if you are unsure. If you are heading to a state forest trail such as the Zaleski Backpack Trail, wear blaze orange during hunting seasons, especially the week of November 30. Stay on marked trails and be visible.

Dress for cold, damp gorges

If the weather turns

Late November can bring rain, wet snow or a hard freeze within the same week. Rain makes the sandstone slick and can raise creek levels, while a freeze can glaze shaded steps even when the parking lot looks clear. If conditions look poor, switch to the flat Ash Cave gorge trail or skip the day entirely. There is no prize for hiking a staircase that is sheeted in ice. Turn around if the footing worries you.

What to confirm before you drive

  1. Trail status. Closures can happen after storms, floods or ice. Our closure-checking guide shows where to look.
  2. Visitor center hours. Ohio DNR lists the visitor center as open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with seasonal changes. I could not confirm a holiday schedule, so check ahead.
  3. Weather. Frost, rain and wind all change trail conditions. Surface conditions can shift quickly between morning and afternoon.
  4. Your route direction. Many trails are one-way. See the one-way trail guide.

Walking with a mixed-age group

Thanksgiving walks often include grandparents, children and a cousin who skipped breakfast. Choose the route for the least mobile person, not the most energetic. Ohio DNR advises close supervision of young children on the trails, and the Ash Cave gorge trail is the one it lists as wheelchair accessible. Agree on a turnaround time before you leave the car, carry a little extra water and a snack, and let faster walkers loop back to meet the group rather than splitting up in the gorge.

Bottom line

For Thanksgiving week, think short, early and layered. A one-mile loop in the late morning, a flat walk on the afternoon of the holiday, and an early start on the busy Friday cover most plans. Finish well before sunset, check conditions the morning of, and wear orange if you head into a state forest during deer season.
