On October 17, 2026, Old Man's Cave will be the most crowded trail in Ohio. Ten miles north, Cantwell Cliffs will have parking. The difference isn't the trail quality — it's the name recognition, the visitor center, and the way day-trip traffic from Columbus flows. The six that don't
- Cantwell Cliffs. Least visited major area, earliest color. The lot rarely fills.
- Rock House. Busy-ish at midday on peak weekends, but a short trail with fast turnover. Empty by 4.
- Hemlock Bridge Trail to Whispering Cave. Starts at the lodge, not the visitor center, so it misses the Old Man's Cave funnel. Long, beautiful, and quiet even on peak days.
- Lake Hope State Park. Twenty-five minutes south, a completely different crowd level, and the Moonville rail trail next door. Color runs a few days behind the park.
- Clear Creek Metro Park. North of Rockbridge, a Columbus metro park with a serious trail system and a fraction of the state park's visitors.
- Wildcat Hollow and the Big Pine Road trails. State forest trails with no visitor center, no shuttle, and no line. Archery season is open in the forest, so wear orange.
The hour-by-hour pattern
It's the same every peak Saturday. 7–9 a.m.: everything is empty and the fog is in the gorges; this is the best two hours of the month and almost nobody uses it. 9–10:30: Columbus arrives. Old Man's Cave and Ash Cave lots fill. 10:30–3: peak crowd; the SR 374 corridor near Old Man's Cave crawls; the shuttle runs full. 3–4:30: the day-trippers start home; lots open up. 4:30–dusk: nearly empty again, and in late October dusk is 6:40, so this window is short. Sundays follow the same curve an hour later and about two-thirds as heavy. Weekdays in October run like a Sunday afternoon all day long.
The two-hike day that avoids all of it
- Morning hike, 7:30 a.m., one of the big four. Old Man's Cave in the fog with nobody on the stairs. Done by 9:30, as the parking lot fills behind you.
- Midday, do anything but hike. Logan for lunch, the pumpkin patch, a winery, the scenic drive on the back roads while SR 374 is jammed.
- Afternoon hike, 3:30 p.m., one of the six. Cantwell Cliffs in afternoon light, or Rock House as it empties. Back at the car by 5:30 with the light going gold.

Dates that make it worse
October 10 (the free Grandma Gatewood hike from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls draws a big morning crowd to the visitor center), October 17 and 24 (the two peak Saturdays), and October 31 (a Saturday Halloween — past peak, but the campground is full and the afternoon is busy). October 21–24 also pulls some traffic west to the Circleville Pumpkin Show, which very slightly helps the trails.
