The One-Day Hocking Hills Hiking Plan for People Who Refuse to Sprint

You can technically visit more. That does not mean you should. A good one-day Hocking Hills plan leaves room to stop walking when the place gets interesting.

The worst first-timer itinerary is seven park areas, three meals in the car, and a running argument about whether the next waterfall is “only fifteen minutes away.” Hocking Hills rewards fewer anchors and more time on foot.

The default plan: two anchors, one optional

Why Old Man’s Cave gets the morning

It is the flagship, it draws crowds, and it is the stop most visitors will regret missing. Putting it first solves the emotional part of the day. Once you have done the headline hike, the rest of the itinerary can flex without feeling like the trip failed.

Why lunch belongs in the itinerary

People routinely plan trail time and drive time but not the 45 minutes required to feed four humans, refill water, use a restroom and find the keys someone dropped under the seat. Put that time on the schedule. It prevents every later stop from becoming a race.

Ash Cave or Cedar Falls?

Choose Ash Cave if the group wants a dramatic second stop with a more accessible approach and lower commitment. Choose Cedar Falls if the group still has legs, does not mind stairs, and wants the waterfall-and-gorge experience to remain the center of the day.

What if parking is ugly?

During the 2026 Saturday/Sunday shuttle season, you have a real alternative: park in Logan and use the free shuttle network connecting Old Man’s Cave with park-loop stops including Cedar Falls and Ash Cave. Outside that season, your best tool is flexibility. Swap the order rather than wasting the day protecting a schedule.

The rule: if adding the third stop means rushing the second one, the third stop is tomorrow’s hike.

What this plan deliberately leaves out

Conkle’s Hollow, Rock House and Cantwell Cliffs are not “less important.” They are good enough to be the reason you come back. If you only have one day, your goal is not to finish Hocking Hills. Your goal is to understand why people return.

Make the hiking plan easier

If one day turns into a weekend, let the lodging match the trails instead of driving back and forth across the hills.

FAQ

How many Hocking Hills trails should I do in one day?

For most first-time visitors, two major trail areas plus one optional short stop creates a better day than trying to collect every headline attraction.

Should Old Man’s Cave be first?

It is usually a strong first stop because it is the flagship trail and parking/crowds become more complicated later in busy periods.

Can the 2026 shuttle help with a one-day itinerary?

Yes on Saturdays and Sundays from May 23 through October 25, 2026; the free shuttle serves Old Man’s Cave and a park loop including Cedar Falls and Ash Cave.
