Memorial Day Weekend 2026 Trail Crowd Guide

April 21, 2026 · 7 min read · Seasonal Guide

Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25, 2026) is the first major crowd weekend of the year at Hocking Hills State Park. Parking lots fill, trails back up, and the experience changes significantly compared to a quiet Tuesday in April. Here's the hour-by-hour, trail-by-trail crowd strategy for getting the most out of the holiday weekend.

Parking: The Real Bottleneck

Most Hocking Hills trailheads have surprisingly small parking lots. Old Man's Cave is the worst — the main lot fills by 9:30–10 AM on a Memorial Day Saturday. When the lot fills, you park along the road shoulder (if legal) or circle back and try later. There is no overflow shuttle system.

Strategy: Arrive at your first trailhead by 7:30 AM. The park opens at dawn (~6:15 AM in late May). Early arrivals get parking, empty trails, and the best light for photography. By 10 AM, the experience is fundamentally different.

Hour-by-Hour Crowd Pattern

6:00–8:00 AM: The Golden Window

Trails are nearly empty. Parking is effortless. Morning light filters through the hemlock canopy. This is when photographers and serious hikers are out. You can hike Old Man's Cave in relative solitude and be done before the crowds arrive.

8:00–10:00 AM: Building

Day-trippers from Columbus (1 hour away) begin arriving. Trails are pleasant but no longer empty. Parking is still available at most lots. This is the sweet spot for families who can't manage a 6 AM start.

10:00 AM–2:00 PM: Peak

Maximum crowds. Old Man's Cave trail has continuous foot traffic. Conkle's Hollow gorge feels crowded. Parking lots are full. The experience is more "popular attraction" than "nature escape." It's still worth doing — the geology doesn't change — but expectations should match reality.

2:00–5:00 PM: Thinning

Day-trippers start heading home. Trails begin to clear. Parking spots reopen. If you skipped the morning, this is your second-best window.

5:00–8:45 PM: The Evening Window

Most visitors are gone by 6 PM. Evening light in the gorges is beautiful. You can hike Ash Cave or Cedar Falls in near-solitude while the sunset light hits the cliff faces. The park is open until dusk (about 8:45 PM in late May), so you have hours of evening hiking available.

Which Trails to Hit When

What Else Is Happening Memorial Day Weekend

Weather contingency: Rain on Memorial Day weekend is a gift in disguise. Waterfalls run at full power, casual visitors stay home, and the trails empty out dramatically. If it rains Saturday, hit the trails — you'll have a better waterfall experience with fewer people. Just bring rain gear and waterproof boots.
