Three meteor showers light up Hocking Hills between early October and mid-November, and 2026 is an unusually good year for fall stargazing. The region's dark skies, open ridges, and John Glenn Astronomy Park make it one of the best meteor-watching locations in Ohio.
Draconids — October 8–9
The Draconids are a warm-up act, but 2026 gives them favorable conditions. This shower is unusual because it peaks in the early evening rather than after midnight — you don't need to stay up late. Expect a modest rate of about 5–10 meteors per hour under dark skies. The 2026 moon conditions are excellent, with dark skies through the peak evening.
Best viewing: face northwest after sunset, around 7–10 PM. The Draconids radiate from the constellation Draco, which sits high in the northwest sky during early evening.
Orionids — October 21–22
The Orionids are debris from Halley's Comet, producing fast meteors (41 miles per second) that often leave glowing trails. Peak rates reach 15–25 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. However, the 2026 Orionids fall during an 80% illuminated moon, which will wash out all but the brightest meteors. Still worth a look if you're out, but temper expectations.
Best viewing: after midnight through predawn, facing southeast toward the constellation Orion. The radiant rises higher through the night.
Taurids — Late October through November 12
The Taurids are the main event for 2026. This is actually two overlapping showers — the Southern Taurids (peaking around November 5) and the Northern Taurids (peaking November 11–12). The combined rate is modest at about 10 meteors per hour, but what makes the Taurids special is their fireballs: slow-moving, exceptionally bright meteors that can light up the entire sky.
The 2026 conditions are the best in a decade. A new moon on November 9 means both the Southern and Northern Taurid peaks fall under essentially dark skies — no moonlight interference at all. For fireball watchers, this is the year.
Best viewing: around midnight when the Taurus constellation is near its highest point. Look generally south and let your eyes adapt for 20–30 minutes. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky.
Where to Watch from the Trails
John Glenn Astronomy Park (JGAP): A dedicated dark-sky facility about a mile from Old Man's Cave, with free public programs most Friday and Saturday nights through late November. The park has a 28-inch telescope and frequently hosts meteor shower viewing events. No reservations needed for public programs.
Conkle's Hollow Rim Trail area: The open ridgetop provides wide sky views with minimal tree obstruction. Note: trails close at dusk, so for meteor watching you'd use the parking area and adjacent clearings rather than the trail itself.
Rock House area: The elevated clearing near the Rock House parking area offers good southern sky exposure.
Your cabin deck: Many ridge-top cabins offer excellent dark-sky views without leaving the property. Properties south of the state park, away from Logan, tend to have the darkest conditions.
Stargazing Tips
No equipment needed — meteors are best seen with the naked eye. Binoculars and telescopes narrow your field of view too much. Give your eyes 20–30 minutes to fully dark-adapt. Avoid looking at your phone screen; if you must, use a red-light app. Dress warmer than you think — sitting still on an October or November night in Ohio gets cold fast. A reclining camp chair or blanket on the ground is more comfortable than standing and craning your neck.
